Have you always wanted to deploy with the RedRover Responders to shelter and care for animals rescued from large cruelty situations or displaced by floods, fires and other natural disasters? Now's your chance.

Attend the RedRover Responders volunteer training workshop in Arlington, Texas on August 10. Your help is needed to spread the word about these training opportunities! Please forward this email to your animal-loving friends and animal rescue volunteers, and post our flier at dog parks, vet clinics and other places where people who care about animals gather.

In more than 25 years of existence, volunteers have provided temporary animal sheltering for more that 130 emergencies. Volunteers also participated in disaster preparedness education and community planning.

No previous experience is required and volunteers of all animal handling skills are welcome. The workshop registration fee of $50 includes a volunteer handbook, and the volunteer t-shirt, official photo ID badge and certificate of completion that are mailed upon completion of the volunteer training program.

In addition to attending one of the four-hour volunteer training workshops, potential volunteers must also complete self-paced online training before being added to our deployment roster.

To learn more about the RedRover Responders volunteer program and training, you can attend a free, online self-paced Volunteer Orientation at any time. Also, read our Emergency Response Journal to get a sense of what it's like at a deployment.

We hope you will help us grow our amazing RedRover Responders volunteer team!

Thursday, June 27: Please attend sentencing hearing for man found guilty of killing Kisses the kitten

Update: The sentencing hearing for Edwon Julian is this Thursday, June 27, beginning at 9 a.m.  As you’ll recall, he was found guilty of felony animal cruelty for killing little Kisses the kitten by throwing her from the second-floor landing of an apartment complex.  The judge, Larry Mitchell, will determine the sentence, which could be as much as 20 years in prison if the judge finds that Julian used a deadly weapon in causing the death.

It’s very important that as many people as possible attend the hearing to show Judge Mitchell that we won’t stand for animal cruelty and that we support the strong prosecution of cruelty cases.  By the way, Judge Mitchell is the presiding judge is the case of puppy Justice.  That trial is now set to begin August 19.

The hearing Thursday will take place in the 292nd District Court on the 6th floor of the Crowley Courts Building, 133 N. Riverfront in Dallas.  Please read below for more details on this case and important information for visitors to the Crowley Courts Building.

Thanks, and I hope to see you there.

What to do when you find an injured bird

Yesterday I found a small injured bird in our backyard. Not being sure what to do I called my veterinarian and they referred me to Rogers Wildlife Sanctuary, just 10 minutes south of downtown Dallas. I also found some helpful information about what to do with the bird before you can take him to the vet or wildlife rescue.

We found out our little bird is a Fledgling White Wing Dove and he will be okay. Big thank you to the staff at Rogers Wildlife Sanctuary. They are wonderful people and please go see them if you have the chance!

Information from the National Audubon Society:

If you find an injured bird, carefully put it in a cardboard box with a lid or a towel over the top, and place in a cool, safe place. Birds go into shock very easily when injured, and often die from the shock. If a bird has hit a window and is still alive, it may just need a little time to regain its senses, then may be able to fly away. Do not try to force feed or give water to the bird. If it is still alive after a few hours, you can try to find a local wildlife rehabilitator. Many belong to your state association for wildlife rehabilitators, and can be found with an on-line search.

The Wildlife Rehabber website has a listing by state of many rehabbers that might be useful:http://wildliferehabber.com/modules/xoopsmembers/

The Wildlife International website also has a directory of rehabilitators worldwide that may have other facilities listed for your region:www.wildlifeinternational.org/EN/public/emergency/emergencyrehab.html

If you have found an orphaned bird, the first step is to determine if it is really orphaned. When many young birds first fledge and leave the nest, they may still have a little down with short tail and wing feathers. Fledglings often also have weak flight muscles and may be fed for a few days by their parents outside of the nest. This is a very vulnerable time for young birds, as they are easy prey for roaming cats and other predators. It is important to keep fledglings safe and to allow the parents to continue feeding them.

If the bird has fallen out of the nest prematurely, or if a tree was cut down and a nest of young is found, a rehabber may be needed. The following chart from the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association can help you determine the proper course of action:http://www.nwrawildlife.org/sites/default/files/FoundBird.pdf .

Adoption Partners should receive a confirmation e-mail. If you do not receive this e-mail, it means that the animal has not yet been tagged for your group.

Adoption Partners must only send people that are on their current “pull lists” so that the correct animal goes to the correct Adoption Partner; if the person is not on the current pull list, please have the president of your group immediately send an email to lynn.trotter@arlingtontx.govsusan.waits@arlingtontx.gov stating that you wish to add that person. Please make sure that your representative has the animal’s correct Animal ID # at the time of pick-up.

Transporters are required to have carriers to transport animals in safely especially if they are transporting multiple animals. Transporters without proper containment devices will be turned away.

Groups that wish to utilize transporters that are not members of their group now have the option of completing the Transfer Out Contract. Group member will need to send an e-mail with their complete name, address and phone number and request that the transfer out contract be sent to them. It will need to be scanned and e-mailed back (or faxed) with a copy of the driver’s license of the person signing the contract as the group member. This will remove the responsibility of providing proof of spay/neuter from the people that are just transporters. Transporters will be sent with a copy of this Contract at the time of pick up. They will also sign it as a transporter and provide a copy of their driver’s license just in case there are any issues.

Puppies need out asap at DAS, we are full!

These two sweet little cattle dog puppies need out of Dallas Animal Services fast!  They were surrendered to the shelter and we do not have the space to hold them!  These two babies came in covered in fleas. This summer, it seems like every dog that comes into the shelter is covered in them!  Fleas are terrible little creatures!  They make puppies itch, lose hair, and can give them tapeworms!

These puppies do have some hair loss but we believe that it was from all the fleas living on them. We have given them baths and they are currently sleeping.  They were pretty scared when they first came in and could use a loving hand to care for them.  With all of their itchiness gone they are quickly coming out of their shells!  Please help them find their forever home!

A793616, A793619

Please email DASrescue@dallascityhall.com to tag any of the cutie pies in this email!

As I said previously, we are currently full and can use all the help we can get!  We have so many adorable little puppies!  Please see some of them below and see if you can help!

SDLF7 A793020
This adorable little boy is Max.  He is currently available for adoption or transfer!  Little Max here is about 2 months old.  His left ear is deformed and the Pinna (ear flap) is missing.  We are not sure if he was born that way or if something happened when he was younger to cause this.  Max is not injured or in any pain, he is just special and unique!

SDLF19 A793015
This little boy is about 3 months old.  We have him as a chi mix but I think he might have some pointer in him.  He also came in, completely infested with fleas (which probably explains his sad look).  We have treated him and he is feeling much better!  He is a little shy but wags his tail when you go to say hi to him!  He was wagging it so fast when I took the picture that it didn’t even register!
He will be available 6/19

SDLF21 A793058
This little pup is an aussie or border collie mix.  She is super sweet and beautiful!  She is currently available for adoption or transfer!

SDLF10 A792853
This little girl is currently available to pull.  She is such a sweetie!  Her sister has been adopted so she is pretty lonely in her kennel L  Can anyone help her find her forever home?

SDLF5 A793052
This little hound mix puppy is unofficially named Howard.  The officer who picked him up asked us to name him Howard, after the fireman who found him wandering around the fire station! :)  I think the puppy was hoping to become a fire station pup!

SDLF3 A793142
This adorable cuteness is named Fluffy.  Fluffy was surrendered when the owner could no longer care for him.  He is super adorable and only 4 months old!  He is currently available for adoption or transfer!

SDLF23 A793589
This cutie is a spaniel mix.  He is only about 3 months old and weighs about 8.2lbs.  He will be available on 6/22.

PCD25
These adorable puppies need out asap!  They were surrendered by their owners and are only 5 weeks old!  They are just too young to be at the shelter.  They are very cute.  It was nap time when I was taking pictures.  They must have had a ruff day, only two were up and wanting attention!  They are tiny little babies, only weighing about a pound and a half, they won’t take up much room!

Please remember to check Petharbor.com so you can see pictures of some of the other available animals here at Dallas Animal Services!

Thanks for all you do!

REMINDER: Friday, June 7: Jury Deliberation Continues in Trial of Man Who Threw Kitten From Second-Floor Apartment

As you know, Edwon Julian is charged with animal cruelty and assault. The jury deliberated last week for more than 10 hours and reached a verdict on the animal cruelty charge but not on the assault charge. The judge ordered the jury to return Friday, June 7, at 8:30 a.m. to resume their deliberations.  When they reach a decision, the verdicts in both cases will be announced.

Please join us in the courtroom Friday morning as we await the verdicts.  If you’re able to attend for a portion of the day, feel free to email me at jonnieengland@att.net before you come to see if we’re still waiting.  It’s so important that we show our support of the DA’s office for prosecuting these cases of animal cruelty and for abused animals everywhere.

Thanks.
 Jonnie

(ORIGINAL EMAIL BELOW.  DETAILS IN HIGHLIGHTED AREAS.)
Jury Selection Starts May 28 in Animal Cruelty Trial of Edwon Julian,

Charged With Throwing Kitten From Second-Floor Apartment

DALLAS--A man accused of killing a kitten by throwing in from a second-floor apartment in Richardson last summer will go on trial next week.

Edwon Kumont Julian, 36, is charged with a State Jail Felony with the enhancement of a deadly weapon.  Jury selection starts Tuesday, May 28, and testimony is expected to begin Wednesday, May 29.  The trial will take place in the 292nd District Court on the 6th floor of the Frank Crowley Courts Building in Dallas with Judge Larry Mitchell presiding.

According the arrest warrant, Richardson police were dispatched to the apartment of Rosa Dismuke on July 31, 2012.  Dismuke said she and Julian, her boyfriend at the time, had gotten into an argument and that he physically assaulted her.  When her two children came to her aid, he tried to use a stun gun on them.  They were able to get the stun gun away from Julian and told him to leave. He then “grabbed her pet kitten by the tail, spun it over his head and threw if off the second-floor landing.” Dismuke told officers that the kitten landed approximately 20 feet away on the pavement.

Officers found the 3- to 4-month-old grey kitten lying on a bed.  The small kitten was still alive but clearly injured and appeared to have a broken back.  Richardson Animal Services was called to the scene, and the kitten died a short time later.

Julian had left the apartment but was arrested a short time later and charged with assault and felony animal cruelty.  He remains in the Dallas County jail on a total bond of $41,000.  If convicted, he could receive 2 to 20 years in prison because of his past criminal history.

The Frank Crowley Courts Building is located at 133 N. Riverfront Boulevard in Dallas.

TIPS FOR ATTENDING A TRIAL:  Parking is $6 cash in two parking garages adjacent to the Courts building at Riverfront and Justice Center, and there are surface lots across the street.  Dress is business attire, and no clothing or badges with slogans are allowed in the courtroom.  Also, no cameras (other than cell/smartphones), nail files or spray bottles (i.e., hair spray) are allowed in the building.  The courthouse is a cash-only building; no checks or credit cards accepted in the cafeteria, snack bar and soda/candy machines, so plan accordingly.

Please attend if you can to show support for the prosecution of animal cruelty cases and to send the message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated.

Trial in Justice's Case Delayed; Will NOT Start Monday, June 10

This just in from the Dallas County DA’s Office: The trial of the four defendants in Justice's case is being reset again; it will NOT start Monday, June 10.

While another delay is very disappointing, rest assured that the State (the DA's Animal Cruelty Unit) has been ready to go to trial each and every time it was set. This latest delay has to do with a totally unrelated case. A capital murder case (of a baby shaken to death) was to start in the same courtroom (the 292nd) this week, but it has been delayed one week, to June 10.  So, Justice’s case is being pushed back.

We asked why that case couldn't be reset instead of Justice's, and the answer was that the defendant in that case has been in jail for more than three years. The four defendants in Justice's case have been in jail (and remain there) since they were arrested last year.

As soon as we hear the new date, we'll let you know.  Also, please check the Animal Newsboard North Texas Facebook page for the latest news and updates about this cruelty case and others: www.Facebook.com/AnimalNewsboardNorthTexas.

We still continue to expect that, eventually, there will be justice for Justice.

Thanks for caring.
